odm was established in Hong Kong in 1999 to produce watches that are “original, dynamic and minimal” – a mission that gave the brand its name.

To help achieve this, the company expanded on its in-house collection by inviting a few high-profile, experimental designers to collaborate: among them, British-born industrial designer Michael Young who developed two ranges for the brand, the MY03 Hacker and MY04 Sunstitch.

Young, a Kingston university graduate, is renowned for producing furniture, lighting and industrial products that combine humour and playfulness with technical innovation. Following stints in Brussels, Reykjavic and Taipei, he currently resides in Hong Kong to be close to the machines and mass production techniques that inspire his work. However, it was old aircraft and car parts from the 1950s that he referenced for his odm watches – particularly for the Hacker.

"I’ve always been slightly obsessed," says Young, referring to the era. "Rather than be retrospective with this watch I wanted to capture the beauty of that era of engineering but bring it forward." The Hacker comprises signature sharp lines to divide the time, and a concave face to help protect the surface from bumps and knocks. Its digital counterpart, the solar-powered Sunstitch, has a touchscreen face enabling the wearer to switch between four different displays.

odm has received a number of prestigious awards over the years, including a Red Dot Award for Outstanding Design in 2004 and five separate prizes from iF Design Award China.
