Issey Miyake

Issey Miyake
Issey Miyake is a Japanese fashion designer, best known for his technology-driven clothing design and pleated garments.

Miyake studied graphic design at the Tama Art University in Tokyo, graduating in 1964. He went on to launch Miyake Design Studio in 1970 and began to show his collections in Paris several years later.

In the late 1980s, Miyake began to experiment with new methods of pleating, and in 1993 launched his seminal Pleats Please collection. Now an internationally renowned designer, Miyake has collaborated with leading brands, designers and artists such as Nendo and Yasumasa Morimura. Miyake’s eponymous brand began creating watches in 2001.

The first watch the company released was designed by Japanese industrial product designer Shunji Yamanaka, and was called Insetto.

Since then, the company has produced timepieces by designers including Yves Behar, Naoto Fukasawa and Jasper Morrison, under the direction of Issey Miyake himself. "The watches embody a clear product design philosophy; function is embraced as an integral part of design," the brand told Dezeen Watch Store.
