Instrmnt was founded by product designer Pete Sunderland and graphic designer Ross Baynham. Both watch fanatics, the Glasgow Caledonian University graduates confess: "When we were studying we used to discuss watches all the time, but there was always something we wanted to change."

Following several years working separately in the design industry, Baynham decided it was time to give watch designing a go and set up something independently. When he contacted Sunderland, the goal was quite simple: to make a high-quality watch with Swiss components and a simple, utilitarian design. "Instrmnt 01 really did come from us saying: 'I love this watch but I hate X about it', so it was almost selfish," Baynham says. "We thought: 'we’re designers, we love watches, why don’t we make the watch that we want to wear? Why don’t we make the watch that is perfect for us?'"

The stripped-back aesthetic of the Instrmnt 01 is influenced by the industrial design of the mid-20th century and was designed quickly thanks to the duo's shared views on the aesthetic. "It comes from amp meters, volt meters and their dials," said Baynham. "We love them and collect them. The watch comes 'exploded' so you get pins, the casing, strap parts and a tool, which are nicely laid out. It's like an instrument that you put together."

The duo used contacts they’d made during their time in the industry to develop prototypes of the watches, but in order to raise the funds needed to put the range into production, they turned to crowdfunding site Kickstarter. During the 25-day campaign, the duo raised nearly £100,000, well over their £20,000 target, and gained almost 1,000 backers. The watches launched September 2014.

The hugely popular range is available in a gunmetal casing and tan leather strap; a brushed rose-gold casing and brown strap; and brushed black with a black strap.
