Benjamin Hubert was born in the UK in 1984. After graduating from Industrial Design and Technology at Loughborough University, Hubert exhibited in several successful degree shows and New Designers 06. At the exhibition, the designer’s ‘Puff Out Lights’ won the Corus Material Award and were short listed in two further categories.
Following a stint at several design consultancies, Hubert set up his own studio in 2009. Driven by the ideals of ‘Material Driven. Process Led. Industrial Design’, the studio works across a range of sectors, from furniture to lighting, consumer goods, architectural installations and art direction. Materials or production techniques are the starting point of almost every project, challenging everyday perceptions of application, construction and context.
Hubert also takes inspiration from the studio’s network of factories and workshop environments, creating products with a strong connection to the making process. Recent works include Ripple, a lightweight timber table, a series of netted furniture for Italian brand Moroso and Tenda, a lighting collection made from underwear fabric. In 2013, Hubert was shortlisted in the Designer of the Year category at the British Design Awards.
