Alessi are an Italian brand famed for their kitchen and tableware – as well as an extensive collection of watches designed by leading architects and designers.
The company was launched in 1921 by Giovanni Alessi and, from the very start, put design at the heart of the business. In the 1950s, under the leadership of Carlo Alessi (the founder’s son) the company began to commission products from outside designers. Carlo’s eldest son recognised the potential in this collaborative process and offered designers creative freedom and technical support; the resultant products gained international recognition and remain brand bestsellers, including Richard Sapper’s espresso coffee pot, the bird-whistle kettle designed by Michael Graves and Philippe Starck’s lemon squeezer.
The Alessi watch collection continues this collaboration process and, to date, Alessi have produced timepieces in conjunction with several leading architects, including Italian maestro Achille Castiglioni, and world-class designers, including flamboyant Dutch star Marcel Wanders. From the concealed decorative underside of Wanders’ design to the playful minimalism of Castiglioni’s Record, each watch fuses the ethos and method of the collaborator with the humorous originality that has come to define the Alessi brand.
